At Gen Lab, a remote former air force base converted into a massive laboratory, a team of scientists is searching for the secret to immortality. Unknown to the other scientists, Dr. Gordon Mallory violates a code of ethics, genetically engineering three subjects, gathered from around the world, who all share the same rare genetic condition that frees them from the ill effects of aging. But there are horrible side effects. Their vocal cords have deteriorated leaving them virtually speechless. They are becoming more and more detached displaying symptoms of manic anxiety disorder. They have become less interactive. It’s as if they’re regressing to a more primal state. Recently subject No 1 bit one of the nurses, not only drawing blood, but removing a chunk of flesh.
Mallory does his best to cover things up, but after another delay in progress, Gen lab’s financial backers are becoming concerned. So they send out corporate executive, Samantha Raines, to investigate the facility. To show their progress, Mallory manages to remove stem cells from subject No 1 that will clearly prove their research is progressing. They just need more time. During the examination one of the researchers, Carson Doyle, is attacked. Part of his face and neck have been torn loose, severing his carotid artery. During the commotion, subject No 2, in a room nearby, throws down a cabinet filled with toxic chemicals that sets off a chain reaction of security failsafe procedures that systematically closes the lab off to the outside world. During the confusion, all three subjects disappear into the facility and are presumed armed and dangerous. Samantha Raines takes control, finds emergency respirators, and orders Dr. Mallory to get them to a cleared exit. Mallory is discussing his plan when No 3 drops through a ventilation shaft from above, landing on top of him. Seconds later a chunk of his neck is missing, a fountain of blood pouring onto the floor. Then No 2 is gone. Two others scientists, Hobbs and Carter, take off in another direction, panicked. But something goes wrong and they end up in a locked observation room with two of the subjects. The room is surrounded by bullet proof glass walls. They all watch in horror as Hobbs and Carter are torn to shreds and eaten alive. Just then the power goes out in the entire facility, leaving them in the dark while backup systems kick on. One of the nurse’s kills a subject by bashing him in the head with a fire extinguisher. They run, bumping into the main group led by Raines. Still freaked by the deaths of their fellow researchers they head back to the main lab. They’re attacked by one of the two “things,” but Raines manages to keep it at bay by jamming a needle into its eye and injecting it with morphine. Then she douses it with a flammable liquid and lights it on fire. The thing goes up in flames, along with all of their research.
The third subject does something critical to endanger the entire group, but the remaining survivors burst out of the building, tear off their masks and suck in the delicious air. They go after No 3, but something happens that is completely epic and everyone is killed except for Raines. Mallory is still inside the facility. Raines is injured and finds a way to kill No 3, but not before the entire base is destroyed in a massive explosion. Seconds later Mallory stumbles out of the building, burnt and charred, but still alive. He and Raines the only survivors.
