He’ll do anything for love, even break the law.
Carlos Galvani, owner of United Bank and Trust, one of the largest privately owned banks in the United States, loses his CEO to a sudden heart attack. Now he’s in a serious pinch. United Bank’s CEO performs many tasks not related to ‘normal’ banking. All of them illegal. He needs someone he can trust, someone he can groom for the position, and he needs him now. He finds a replacement, Dexter Grant. But Dexter is a straight shooter, and will have to be corrupted fast.
The first day on the job, Dexter runs into Carlos’s 19 year old daughter, unbeknownst to him, in the elevator. They exchange a few pleasantries, then Dexter says something funny and clever. They both share a laugh, staring into each other’s eyes a little too long. Carlos starts grooming Dexter immediately, giving him a large signing bonus. On his way home, Dexter buys a brand new Corvette. Dexter is invited to Carlos’s home for dinner and discovers the girl from the stairs. Her name is Kim, she’s Carlos’s daughter. Carlos gets a private call. They have one week to start laundering through his bank or his suppliers are going somewhere else. He tells them not to worry, he’s on it. Kim plays footsie with Dexter at the kitchen table. Dexter is beat red, but manages to keep his composure. After dinner, they say goodbye, but before Dexter leaves Carlos suggests that there’s a way for him to make some “real” money. Then gives him something to take action on if he’s interested. Carlos is getting ready to pitch Dexter, but wants him locked in a little more. He knows he’s got some serious debt after his recent divorce. And he’s hungry. That helps. The next day Dexter runs into Kim at the mall, they spend the day together and end up having sex. The next few days are a whirlwind. They can’t get enough of each other. Carlos has carefully set everything up and is ready to approach Dexter. He’s positive he’s going to go for the deal. And just in time, they have to start the laundering process up again tomorrow or he’ll be out millions of dollars. That night, Carlos sees Dexter and Kim together and about shits himself. He follows them to a movie theater. He’s pacing outside, fuming. Then he barges in to the dark theater, finds his daughter, punches Dexter in the face and takes her home.
Dexter, completely smitten with Kim, tells her he’ll leave the job if it means they can be together. Dexter, thinking the worst, comes into work the next day to pack his shit and leave. But Carlos says to hold on. They talk and he learns that he’s serious about his daughter. So Carlos, in a moment part desperation, and part fatherly concern, tells Dexter everything. That he’s a mob boss and they’re a mob family. If he wants to date his daughter then he has to be all in. Dexter is shocked, and doesn’t know what to say. Just then Kim comes in the room and sits next to Dexter. She says she loves him, and that he hopes he makes the right decision. Then leaves the room. Dexter stays. The next day Dexter is getting up to speed on the laundering process and what’s needed from him as CEO. He’s now locked in and can’t leave without being implicated. The next day, the reader realizes the whole thing was a setup as Carlos thanks his daughter and apologizes for the sacrifice she had to make for The Family. He says she needs to dump Dexter now so he can lean in on him hard and prepare him for his real job. Something way worse than laundering money. That night Kim tells Dexter everything, how it was all a set up to get him under The Family’s thumb. She’s supposed to leave him now, but she loves him. Dexter is shocked, but sees the truth in Kim’s eyes. He laughs saying he would have done it for the money alone, but she’s a hell of a bonus.
